Essential Oils and Making Your Own Natural Products for Your Hair
Article by Moriah Herbs
A healthy and all-natural approach to hair care is not as difficult as you might think. Some of the most expensive hair care products in the world might claim to be natural products but all too often they contain detergents, fragrances, and synthetic ingredients, truth be told the lavender shampoo you love so much is full of synthesized stuff and probably smells nothing like the real thing at all.
Making your own natural products for your hair is not only incredibly easy but its economical, and most importantly its fun! Most of the supplies to make all natural products for bath, body, and hair care can be found in the grocery store, the local health food store or even the local farmers market, and any supplies that you might buy at the farmers market has the added benefit of going to support local farmers and crafts people in your community so it is not only good for your hair but good for your community too.
It is important to note that when making your own natural hair products you should always use the highest quality of ingredients and supplies. Using good quality ingredients will always yield better natural products. Whenever possible use organic herbs and organic essential oil, this will make your hair even healthier. Use either distilled or if at all possible spring water again this will yield a higher quality of product, and there is just something magical about washing your hair with a spring water product. Finally always keep everything squeaky clean, this includes work surfaces, utensils, and your hands, this will prevent contamination of your natural products.
There are many different combinations of herbs and essential oils that you could try depending on your hair type, color or any other special considerations you may have.
Chamomile and calendula are great herbs if you want to bring out blond highlights; likewise, sage and comfrey are the best herbs to bring out dark highlights. For oily hair rosemary and yarrow are excellent, if the hair is dry two of the best herbs to use are marshmallow and nettle.
Essential oils also have their uses for hair problems, some great essential oils for oily hair are basil, lemon, and ylang-ylang, are all great for oily hair but they can also treat dandruff, encourage hair growth, give golden highlights, and make hair thicker.
Rose is great for fine hair and also is soothing to the scalp. Peppermint and Rosemary are not only excellent for dry scalp but they promote healthy hair growth. Lavender and Tea Tree are two of the most popular essential oils for bath and body product, are not only good for the hair but they are also antibacterial and are two of the essential oils used for treating many conditions including what all parents fear, the dreaded head lice, and calendula infused oil is used for treating another common childhood scalp problem, cradle cap.
Try making your own natural products for all your families hair care needs, you will love the results.
